Dr. William Li, President and Medical Director of the Angiogenesis Foundation, discussed how bioactives in foods positively impact the body’s health defense systems to fight disease

CAMBRIDGE, MA – The Angiogenesis Foundation announced today its President and Medical Director Dr. William Li gave a keynote address at Sentara Healthcare’s Nutrition as Medicine Conference held in Virginia Beach, Virginia, this week. The conference featured world-renowned medical experts who discussed the health benefits of a plant-based diet. Along with Dr. Li, other leading dietary health experts such as Drs. Dean Ornish, T. Colin Campbell, Neal Barnard, and Caldwell Esselstyn talked about the mounting scientific evidence on how plant-based foods can help improve health outcomes.

“We know that 80 percent of all chronic diseases can be prevented with diet and lifestyle interventions – and this includes 40 percent of all cancer,” said Dr. William Li. “It’s more important now than ever before that people are getting plant-based bioactives into their diets to activate the body’s powerful health defense systems. There is strong scientific evidence supporting the benefits of more than 200 health-activating foods. The key is understanding how the body responds to the foods we eat.”

“The response we got to this event was truly overwhelming, with people traveling from far and wide to attend. In the end, 1,000 people turned out to listen to some of the world’s most pioneering doctors talk about the science behind food as medicine,” said Dr. Gunadhar Panigrahi, Operational Medical Director for Sentara Ornish Lifestyle Medicine. “Dr. William Li’s research into the science of how the body heals itself and mesmerizing presentation about the effect that certain foods can have on disease made a big impact on our audience.”

In his address, Dr. Li talked about how people can take control of their life by choosing the right foods, in the right amounts each day, to activate the body’s key defense systems: angiogenesis, regeneration, microbiome, DNA protection, and immunity.

The science of how nutrition impacts our health defense systems is a key pillar of the Angiogenesis Foundation’s new global initiative called HealthXpedition™, announced by Dr. Li in April 2018 at the Vatican’s Unite to Cure conference. The HealthXpedition™ builds upon data presented in Dr. Li’s popular TED Talk.
