Food: A Powerful Solution for Disease Prevention

Many Diseases Are Preventable

Food is a powerful, yet largely untapped resource for disease prevention.

More than 85 percent of the U.S.’s healthcare expenditures go toward treating chronic diseases, most of which are preventable. The WHO reports, for example, that 80 percent of cases of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes are preventable. So is 40 percent of all cancer.

Science shows many foods can prevent, halt or even reverse cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and other life-threatening chronic diseases. Over the past decade, the Angiogenesis Foundation has discovered and gathered evidence that fruits, vegetables, herbs, seafood, tea, coffee, and even chocolate contain natural substances — bioactives — that can prevent and intercept disease by influencing angiogenesis and other defense systems in the body. What we eat and drink is enormously impactful when it comes to preventing disease.

Our Approach is Different

The health benefits of foods, beverages, and ingredients depend on many factors – including the specific cultivated variety, the way they are processed and cooked, and even what foods are combined together.

Using the same research systems and methodologies we use to test medicines, we test varieties and combinations of foods, beverages, and ingredients and how cooking, processing, and storage impact their potency against disease. We discover how to eat foods, drink beverages, and utilize ingredients with the most prevention activity to optimize their effects. Our vision is food will be the ultimate delivery vehicle for natural bioactive molecules that prevent diseases in their earliest stages.

The first-ever global collaboration exploring how our bodies’ innate defense systems interact with our food and our environment.

Our Commitment

Let’s rethink health and how we prevent disease.

We believe diet can have as powerful a potential for preventing diseases as drugs have for treating them. We’re committed to rethinking our approach to health by preventing cancer and other non-communicable diseases with foods, beverages, and ingredients that stimulate the body’s natural defense systems. We’re harnessing the scientific knowledge we’ve amassed in drug development over two decades and we’re applying it to food to create evidence-based and accessible health solutions.
